• Courses in the art department provide for initial art skill and knowledge as well as satisfying the fine arts requirements for graduation. Students may take additional courses for in-depth study in one art area, or participate in a variety of art areas focusing on a career in the visual arts. All classes are designed to enhance intellectual and communications skills, technical ability in art production and criticism, creative thinking, and a better understanding of nature and world culture through studies in art history.

    COURSES

    Art I: 2D/3D Design - The purpose of this course is to enable students to communicate ideas and concepts through two- and three-dimensional design and composition and develop appreciation of exemplars in varied cultures and historical periods.

    Art II, III: Drawing/Painting - Motivated students who have completed Art I may sign up for this in-depth study of design and composition as applied to painting, drawing, and printmaking.

    Art IV: Portfolio - Motivated students who have completed Art II/III may sign up for this course.

    AP Art 2D - The purpose of AP Art 2D is to address a very broad interpretation of two-dimensional design issues. This type of design involved purposeful decision-making about how to use the elements and principles of art in an integrative way. It is for the advanced student who wishes to seek AP credit through the submitting of a portfolio of work for consideration by the college board.

    AP Art 3D - This AP course addresses a very broad interpretation of sculptural issues in three-dimensional design. Such elements and concepts may be articulated through additive, subtractive, and/or fabrication processes. It is for the advanced student who wishes to seek AP credit through the submitting of a portfolio of work for consideration by the college board.

    AP Art Drawing - The purpose of this course is to give advanced students the opportunity to develop quality, concentration, discipline, and breadth in drawing.

    Pottery I, II, III - The purpose of these courses is to enable students to recognize the properties, possibilities, and limitations of clay by creating functional and nonfunctional works of ceramics and pottery using basic hand-building techniques (Pottery 1), intermediate-level hand-building and basic wheel-throwing techniques (Pottery 2), and advanced hand-building, intermediate-level wheel-throwing, and firing techniques (Pottery 3).

    Jewelry I, II - This course stresses a basic understanding of jewelry. It will address the development of knowledge and the application of jewelry skills, techniques, methods, tools, forming processes, and the understanding of jewelry making using natural and manmade materials.

    Photography I, II, III - This course gives students a basic understanding of photography as an art form. Students will develop and print their own photographs.
